Director of Philanthropy

Job Description:
The Director of Philanthropy will be charged with strategically developing and managing a robust major gifts program for gifts of $1,000 and above with an emphasis on $10,000 . This position will be responsible for exercising independent judgment to sell and achieve major gift revenue goals and will work closely with the President and Board of Directors, Vice-President, Director of Corporate Engagement and the Director of Collective Impact.

Essential Functions:

  • Serve as the knowledge expert to build and execute strategies for the identification, solicitation, cultivation, stewardship and growth of major gifts. This includes developing a portfolio of current and prospective donors and foundations with identified revenue and growth goals as measured by number of in office/home visits, number of prospect outreach meetings, number of asks/solicitations and the ability to raise at least $160,000 in new revenue to support specific initiatives.
  • Develop meaningful ways to engage donors and prospects (throughout the year) through stewardship and involvement in events and volunteer opportunities.
  • Create and implement customized giving opportunities and develop tailored proposals, gift solicitations and case statements for current and prospective donors, (align donor interests with impact strategies).
  • Work to reactivate lapsed donors.
  • Develop a loyal donor program that provides recognition for our longtime donors.
  • Implement a planned giving strategy that targets large and loyal donors.
  • Collaborate with Resource Development campaign professionals to develop strategies to move a percentage of workplace campaign leadership givers to higher level of giving.
  • Develop expert working understanding of Collective Impact Investment strategy framing and identify opportunities to leverage and increase mission related giving among leadership donors.
  • Maintain current and accurate leadership giving information in our Customer Relationship Management (CRM) database for marketing purposes.
  • Demonstrate superior customer service skills and give expert advice, both internally and externally.
  • Work closely with the Collective Impact team to create and maintain relationships with specific foundations and to provide opportunities for engagement around our organizational products and initiatives and identify sources for funding. Research opportunities to align our work with donor interests.
  • Be responsible for developing and managing expenses within the Major Gifts program.
  • Possess and adhere to United Way’s core competencies and guiding principles.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Job Requirements:

  • Experience in gaining access and navigating complex, multi-site, corporate and private accounts.
  • Experience working within a “team” sales environment, leveraging shared resources to generate greater impact.
  • Experience with donor research and prospecting.
  • Must have knowledge of local philanthropic community.
  • Proven experience in consultative selling, including to C-Level Executives and Senior Management.
  • Demonstrated ability to meet predetermined revenue goals.
  • Understands general business and financial principles required to effectively lead, manage, and align resources for performance.
  • Minimum 3-5 years fundraising experience for established nonprofit organizations.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with organizational levels within a diverse environment. 
  • Excellent professional communication skills (written and verbal).
  • Strong detail orientation, analytical, organizational, and time management skills a must.
  • Proficient in donor and/or sales customer relationship management (CRM) databases.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required. Prior development training and CFRE certification preferred.
