Ryan Mulling Short-term Spending Bill

Some House conservatives are opposing a rushed, year-end deal

Speaker Paul Ryan (R–WI) reportedly wants Congress to finish tax reform before trying to do a year-end budget deal with Democrats.

Government funding runs out on Dec. 8 but tax reform might not be done by then. The Senate wants to take up its own tax bill after Thanksgiving and then House and Senate negotiators will have to work out the differences between the two bills. Given that, Ryan is said to be considering a short-term stopgap funding bill of several weeks to fund the government through the end of the year.

According to POLITICO, Democrats may be open to a short-term continuing resolution for a week or so, but House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) is reluctant to push the negotiations into 2018. House conservatives, including members of the Freedom Caucus, are opposing a rushed, year-end deal, particularly any deal that increases spending without offsetting cuts.
