How to Hit Refresh in Your Career

Why to do it again and again

This fall my oldest daughter started her freshman year in high school at a brand new school, which was an exciting and slightly nerve-wracking time for her (and me)! She was the one who decided to make the change and “hit refresh,” but at her middle school she had built a support system of friends and teachers, none of whom would be at her new school. As my wife and I were helping her prepare, I couldn’t help but look back at my own career path and all the times I hit refresh either by design or happenstance. Just a few examples:

  • Taking a job as a speech assistant for Bill Gates with zero speech writing experience
  • Leaving Seattle to move to Paris for a role in a sales organization
  • Leading a small, relatively obscure product engineering team
  • Creating and leading a large retail/telco sales organization
  • Saying yes to my current role as Chief Marketing Officer for our new CEO in 2014

I was reminded that starting fresh brings with it incredible lessons and professional growth that have been a key part of my career which has spanned 26 years, multiple countries, a variety of professions and, most importantly, many leaps of faith into the unknown.
