Our View: Civility in Politics Isn't About Stifling Dissent

How American political incivility is eating away at our democracy

Incivility in American politics is a cancer that’s eating away at our democracy. When families can’t sit down to an Easter or Passover meal without fearing table-talk about politics, something’s gone badly awry.

The Rochester League of Women Voters aims to do something about that.

League committee members Michon Rogers, Catherine Davis and Kim Norton met with the Post-Bulletin editorial board Tuesday and outlined plans for a month focused on restoring civility to the ways we talk about politics. Called Revive Civility Month, the League hopes to lay the groundwork for a more productive, respectful type of political engagement this campaign season, based on work done by the National Institute for Civil Discourse.
