When the Nobel committee awarded the 1991 peace prize to Aung San Suu Kyi, it called the then-opposition leader’s struggle “one of the most extraordinary examples of civil courage in Asia in recent decades."
Last week, Aung San Suu Kyi, now Myanmar’s de facto leader, earned widespread international condemnation after failing to speak out after the jailing of two Reuters journalists, Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo, for their reporting on the killing of 10 Rohingya Muslims by soldiers and Buddhist villagers.
Commenting on her government’s failure to deal with a range of economic and military issues, the International Crisis Group said: “Rarely has the reputation of a leader fallen so far, so fast.”
