The Shane Yates Aspiring Leaders Institute Will Be Held Again This Fall

The three-day course will be held at Ohio State University's Fawcett Center

Once again this fall, the Ohio Society of Association Executives will be offering the Shane Yates Aspiring Leaders Institute (SYALI) to members who are interested in completing the leadership course and more fully developing their leadership and management skills. The program, which will be three full-day courses beginning at 8:30 a.m. and ending at 4:00 p.m., will be held once more at the Fawcett Event Center at the Ohio State University.

The courses focus on multiple association management topics, including governance, leadership development, finance knowledge and implementation, working with boards, developing proper communications and branding skills, interacting with volunteer leaders and members and public policy.  Twelve leaders from across various segments of Ohio's association industry will present their experiences in interactive sessions designed to drive engagement and develop participants' knowledge on the various areas of exploration.

"This program was created to help our entry and mid-level members develop their leadership skills so that they can one day find themselves in the c-suite and leading from an executive level," said Jarrod A. Clabaugh, CAE, president & CEO of OSAE. "In the past two years, we have found that participants who excel are those that come into the program thirsty for knowledge and a willingness to adapt how they approach problems. The Fawcett Center is the perfect host for this event because they understand education and the value of lifelong learning. Additionally, our presenters are passionate about their topic of interest, and this is evident to our member participants."

The SYALI is OSAE's cohort-based leadership development program designed to develop essential skills, to strengthen and build the professional careers and to encourage the involvement of entry-and mid-level association executives while strengthening community within OSAE. The curriculum was created for individuals committed to taking their leadership to the next level and who want to make a significant impact on their organizations and the association community. The program includes sessions organized around the following themes:

What do participants say?
"Prior to joining the association industry, I provided services to association-based entities and was intrigued with the internal and external processes of these organizations," said Andrew Allman, the director of business operations at the Ohio Agribusiness Association and executive director of the Nutrient Stewardship Council, who participated in the program's inaugural class. "Given my current role as an association professional who assists in the operations of five different organizations, I have quickly realized the endless learning opportunities. The SYALI program was a perfect way for me to gain leadership skills that will assist me in my current position, future association and community/volunteer positions. Information and learning tools provided during the various workshops helped me understand the importance of the CAE credential and I aspire to join the network of similarly committed association professionals."

In addition to providing speakers for the program, OSAE's sister organization, the OSAE Foundation, recognizes the value of SYALI and, thus, has committed to underwriting two fellowships for students who enroll in this year's program. Individuals interested in the scholarship should send a letter to osaef@osae.org explaining their situation, stating the reason why they feel they should be a recipient of the scholarship and how they intend to use the knowledge they gain from the program to better themselves and Ohio's association community.

The deadline to apply to the program is Oct. 19, 2018.

This year's program will launch Oct. 30, 2018 at the Fawcett Event Center with two more full-day programs on Nov. 13 and Nov. 27. Boxed lunches will be provided to participants.
