Visit U.S. Coalition Supports JOLT Act

The legislation promotes international travel to the U.S.

Members of the Visit U.S. Coalition, including the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE), applauded legislation introduced last week to promote international travel to the U.S. and bolster job creation and economic activity.

The “Jobs Originating through Launching Travel” (JOLT) Act was introduced by Reps. Mike Quigley (D-IL) and Tom Rice (R-SC). The bill includes reforms to U.S. visa laws that will streamline entry into the country for pre-approved visitors and create a pilot program for processing visas by video conferencing. The bill would also re-brand the Visa Waiver Program as the Secure Travel Partnership to more accurately reflect the intent of the program.

“International tourism generates billions of dollars in economic activity every year,” Quigley said. “As members of Congress, it is our responsibility to put policies in place that support this sector of our economy while also ensuring the safety and security of our nation. The updates to our visa program made by the JOLT Act will drive essential progress on both of these goals.”

Research conducted by the Visit U.S. Coalition suggests that improved processes for international visitors to gain entry into the U.S. will greatly benefit American businesses. According to the coalition, each overseas traveler spends approximately $42,00 when they visit the U.S., directly supporting 1.2 million jobs.

“Welcoming international travelers to American shores has undeniable benefits – from boosting the economy with spending at hotels, restaurants and retail shores, to showing the world what makes America great,” said Visit U.S. Coalition spokesperson Andrea Riccio. “The JOLT Act will ensure that the U.S. can realize the economic benefits of international travel.”
