A Data Competition to Understand Outcomes
One of the key tools that will help overcome the COVID-19 crisis is better data, which can help explain the health, demographic and social factors that make some people more susceptible to the disease. A new initiative of the American Heart Association (AHA) is designed to encourage researchers to explore those connections.
This week, AHA announced a “data challenge” with the goal of identifying underlying conditions, such as diabetes and obesity, that could be tied to COVID-19 outcomes. It also seeks to gain insight into “health disparities and social determinants of health that bring a higher burden of illness or mortality based on factors such as ethnicity, gender, geography or income,” according to a news release announcing the the initiative.
