COVID-19 Update: Governor DeWine issues Urgent Health Advisory

May 19, 2020

Today, during his daily press briefing, Governor Mike DeWine issued an Urgent Health Advisory, entitled "Ohioans Protecting Ohioans."

In the new advisory, there are explicit instructions related to six-feet social distancing parameters, a limit of 10 people for mass gatherings, frequent hand-washing and additional sanitization requirements. The advisory also incorporates business orders, such as sanitation and the need for employees to wear face masks.

As of today at 2 p.m., there were 28,952 total COVID-19 cases in Ohio, with 1,720 deaths. To date, only 277,602 people have been tested in the state.

The advisory details who are the most vulnerable: people 65 years of age or older. It also includes people of all ages who are immuno-compromised, including asthma sufferers and those with chronic kidney disease, diabetes and obesity.

In addition, the advisory urges these people to stay home as much as possible, and when leaving their homes, to wear masks, practice social distancing and conduct proper hand-washing procedures.

"(The order) considers our most vulnerable Ohioans as those who can suffer the worst impacts from the virus," said DeWine. "The order strongly recommends that high-risk Ohioans stay at home as much as possible. They should avoid places where they are likely to encounter a lot of people."

The advisory also recommends all other Ohioans stay home whenever possible.

"The coronavirus is not gone," DeWine added. "It is real. And it is deadly. This new phase that we are now in is about learning to live with this virus. It is with us, it will remain with us, and we must do all we can to contain it and keep it from killing our fellow citizens."
