Governor DeWine Unveils Plans for K-12 Schools for Fall 2020

Masks will be required for staff, recommended for students 3rd grade and up

Today, Governor Mike DeWine unveiled new guidance from the state on reopening schools this fall amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The governor issued five guidelines for Ohio schools to follow:

  1. Vigilantly assess for symptoms (including temperature checks)
  2. Wash & sanitize hands
  3. Clean & sanitize shared surfaces at schools
  4. Practice social distancing
  5. Face coverings policy (required for staff, recommended for kids 3rd grade and up

DeWine said the guidelines are backed by science and his office worked with educators and health officials to create them. Schools can adjust their rules to what works best for them, the governor said. He also indicated that he plans to work with the Ohio General Assembly to ensure federal CARES Act dollars are available to districts to help cover costs associated with opening schools safely.
