August 17, 2020

Current updates on association response to the global COVID-19 crisis, along with a roundup of conference, travel and business news and information.

Scheduled Departures Have Plummeted, But Not Equally
Everyone has been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic—but not all states are affected equally by the curtailing of air travel, reveals new data from Airlines for America.

Measured by decreases in scheduled departures from July of last year to this July, New York is the state that’s suffered the most, with 70 percent fewer flights, followed by New Jersey (67 percent fewer flights) and Rhode Island (61 percent fewer flights). Montana is the state least affected, with 25 percent fewer departures.

Hawaii faces a unique circumstance thanks to its location. Despite having 53 percent fewer flights this year—close to the national average of 50 percent—travel to the state is down 93 percent from last year. The analysis also covered Transportation Security Administration checkpoint volumes and concluded that Hawaii is on par with New York in decreased volume, at 85 percent to New York’s 86 percent.
