The federal health insurance marketplace, Healthcare.gov, reopened Monday for a special enrollment period that will run through mid-May as part of efforts by President Joe Biden to ensure that Americans in need of insurance coverage during the coronavirus pandemic have access to health care.
"Healthcare is a right, not a privilege, and I will do everything in my power to ensure that all Americans have access to the quality, affordable health care they deserve," the President said in a statement. "That is especially critical in the midst of a deadly pandemic that has already taken the lives of more than 470,000 of our fellow Americans and infected more than one out of every 12 additional Americans, often with devastating consequences to their health."
The special enrollment period, which extends to May 15, allows Americans in need of health insurance to sign up for coverage through Healthcare.gov. In late January, Biden signed an executive order allowing the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to establish the special enrollment period for uninsured and underinsured Americans to seek coverage through the federal marketplace in light of the "exceptional circumstances" caused by the pandemic.
