COVID-19 Update: 1,254 New COVID Cases Reported Today

March 8, 2021

Today, the Ohio Department of Health (ODH) reported 1,254 new cases of COVID-19 along with 84 hospitalizations. The state did not release a number of reported deaths for the last 24 hours.

The number of daily new cases is back to more than 1,000 after the state saw a dip below that threshold on Sunday.

After underreporting deaths related to COVID-19, the department announced it will move to a different system that is more accurate, but data release could be slower. ODH expects death numbers to fluctuate. The death totals are now tabulated from death certificates that have been reviewed and are certified.

"Other states do not send these death certificates to ODH's Bureau of Vital Statistics on a regular schedule and therefore fluctuations will be reflected in reported mortality data," a disclaimer read on the state's data dashboard, according to an article from WBNS-10TV.

To date, ODH has reported 979,725 confirmed cases, 17,502 deaths and 50,965 hospitalizations. Today, the department reported 927,244 presumed recoveries and 1,997,268 as the number of Ohioans who have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.
