Powell Praised by U.S. Politicians from Both Parties as Trailblazer

He was a trusted adviser to presidents

U.S. politicians from both parties on Monday remembered Colin L. Powell as a highly respected public servant, trusted adviser to presidents and statesman upon learning that the former secretary of state and chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff had died of complications from COVID-19.

“Colin embodied the highest ideals of both warrior and diplomat,” President Joe Biden said in a statement. “He was committed to our nation’s strength and security above all. Having fought in wars, he understood better than anyone that military might alone was not enough to maintain our peace and prosperity.”

Biden acknowledged the endorsement he received from Powell, a registered Republican who was upset with his party’s political turn.
