Northeast Ohio Hospitals Donated Nearly $2 billion to Communities in 2021

This represents a 5 percent increase from 2020

Northeast Ohio hospitals provided nearly $2 billion in community benefit in 2021, a 5 percent increase from 2020, according to a new report from the region's hospital association, the Cleveland-based Center for Health Affairs.

The $2 billion figure does not include community benefit derived from Medicare shortfalls — the difference between the cost of care and the smaller amount Medicare pays — and bad debt.

When Medicare shortfall and bad debt were combined with other forms of community benefit, the community benefit for Northeast Ohio hospitals rose to $2.6 billion in 2021, up nearly 2 percent from the previous year, the Center’s report found. The nonprofit Center for Health Affairs advocates for Northeast Ohio hospitals.
