U.N. Report Looks at Need for Plastic Reduction

‘Deep’ policy shifts could reduce plastic pollution by 80 percent by 2040

A United Nations report published Tuesday asks for an 80 percent reduction in plastic pollution globally by 2040 to keep “plastics out of ecosystems, out of our bodies and in the economy.”

The report from the United Nations Environment Programme finds that the reduction can be achieved “if countries and companies make deep policy and market shifts using existing technologies.” It suggests that governments halve their single-use plastics production over the next nearly two decades.

“The way we produce, use and dispose of plastics is polluting ecosystems, creating risks for human health and destabilizing the climate,” UNEP Executive Director Inger Andersen said in a statement.
