What to do Now That I-9 Flexibilities Are Ending

Here are steps to take to address this

HR Question: I’ve read that the Form I-9 flexibilities put into place due to COVID-19 are due to expire in July. Do I need to do anything with the documentation for remote workers hired during COVID?

HR Answer: Yes, you’re correct – the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) confirmed that the temporary flexibilities for verifying documents for I-9 forms will expire July 31, 2023. If you hired any remote team members during the COVID-19 pandemic (on or after March 20, 2020), you will now be required to physically verify the appropriate employment documents for those workers.

Steps to Address the End of I-9 Flexibilities

While the I-9 verification flexibilities end on July 31st, employers have between now and August 30th, 2023, to complete the physical verification process. So, what should be your next step as an employer?
