Portman Pushing IRS Overhaul Bill

He and Grassley intend to hold a hearing about reform

Sen. Rob Portman (R-OH) said this week he wants to “recreate the momentum” for a major overhaul of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

Portman and Sen. Ben Cardin (D-MD) introduced bipartisan legislation last year to reform a number of IRS functions and administrative practices in order to make the agency more responsive and accountable to taxpayers. The House passed a similar IRS reform bill in December, but the Senate did not act on the Portman-Cardin bill before

Portman told reporters after the Feb. 5 State of the Union address that he met with Senate Finance Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-IA) about holding a hearing on the need for IRS reform.

“It has been 20 years since the last significant IRS reform and it is time to update the agency once again,” Portman said at the introduction of his bill last year. “The bipartisan Protecting Taxpayers Act will restructure and reform the IRS to make it more responsive and accountable to the needs of taxpayers and help restore Americans’ faith in this agency.”
