Honest Ads Act Reintroduced

It would update disclosure and transparency rules for online political advertising

This week, a bipartisan group of legislators introduced the Honest Ads Act in the U.S. House of Representatives and the Senate. The legislation would update disclosure and transparency rules for online political advertising. Political and social media ads sold online would be held to the same standard as those that appear on TV, radio and print.

Senators Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), Mark Warner (D-VA) and Lindsey Graham (R-SC) introduced legislation on Tuesday, May 7. In the House, Representatives Derek Kilmer (D-WA) and Elise Stefanik (R-NY) introduced the bill. Senator Graham joined the Honest Ads Act in place of the late Senator John McCain (R-AZ). The same legislation was introduced in 2017.

“Hardening our electoral infrastructure will require a comprehensive approach and it can’t be done with a single piece of legislation," Graham said. "I am co-sponsoring this legislation because it’s clear we have to start somewhere. I am pleased to work with Sens. Klobuchar and Warner to address the gaps that currently exist, particularly with regards to social media. Online platforms have made some progress but there is more to be done.”
