Local Cities Wrestle With Growing Short-term Rental Industry

Oakwood and Yellow Springs are among the local communities seeking ways regulate Airbnb and other short-term property rentals that have challenged the traditional hospitality industry.

Supporters say short-term lodging offers affordable options for travelers and helps property owners looking to make extra income, but many communities say the industry threatens affordable housing and poses security issues.

The relationship between Airbnb and other types of transient guest lodging (TGL) with local communities varies widely. Yellow Springs this month approved restrictions on the short-term rentals, Oakwood is in the process of banning them, but Dayton and Fairborn are among the cities without any specific regulations.
