Staff Challenges
While more than a third of trade groups (36 percent) say that the COVID-19 crisis hasn’t affected their staffing approach, most organizations are reporting a range of issues caused by the pandemic, according to the latest edition of the ASAE Research Foundation’s Association Impact Snapshot.

Two of the most common issues, suspended or deferred salary increases or bonuses (26 percent) and a hiring freeze (25 percent), highlight financial challenges organizationally due to the crisis. Less common, however, were salary reductions (11 percent), permanent staff layoffs (10 percent) and a reduction of staff benefits (8 percent) and hours (6 percent). But the situation also had impacts on how associations worked internally during the crisis, with 28 percent shifting their team activities, 18 percent reskilling staff and 6 percent relying on volunteers more often. In a separate question, 83 percent of respondents stated that operational disruptions caused by COVID-19 impacted staff at all levels, while 5 percent said executive and senior staff were most impacted, 3.6 percent said managers, and 8.4 percent cited staff at other levels of the association.
