Coronavirus Tracker: COVID-19’s Impact on Association Staffing

June 8, 2020

Current updates on association response to the global COVID-19 crisis, along with a roundup of conference, travel and business news and information.

How COVID-19 is Affecting Association Staff
While more than a third of associations say the COVID-19 crisis hasn’t had a major impact on staff operations despite remote work, many organizations are experiencing some disruptions to staffing and staff activities, according to the latest edition of the ASAE Research Foundation’s Association Impact Snapshot survey.

Some are related to financial challenges as associations take a hit to revenue due especially to conference cancellations or postponements. About one in four respondents said they had suspended or deferred salary increases or bonuses (26 percent) or had implemented a hiring freeze (25 percent). Less common were salary reductions (11 percent), permanent staff layoffs (10 percent), and a reduction of staff benefits (8 percent) or hours (6 percent).

The pandemic has also affected how associations have worked internally during the crisis, with 28 percent shifting team-building activities, 18 percent re-skilling staff, and 6 percent relying more heavily on volunteers. Most respondents (83 percent) said operational disruptions caused by COVID-19 affected staff at all levels, while 5 percent said executive and senior staff were most impacted, 3.6 percent said managers, and 8.4 percent cited staff at other levels.
