Ginther: City of Columbus to Require Face Coverings in Public

The order goes into effect July 3, 2020

Columbus Mayor Andrew Ginther will be signing an executive order making wearing a mask in public mandatory beginning July 3, 2020 to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 (coronavirus).

Ginther says there are exemptions including people under the age of six and people trying to communicate with individuals who are hearing impaired. When asked about enforcement, the mayor said Columbus police will not be stopping people to issue citations.

Ginther, Columbus Health Commissioner Dr. Mysheika Roberts and community leaders are making an announcement Thursday afternoon on masks and COVID-19. This comes one day after Bexley and Dayton issued ordinances requiring people to wear masks.

"Columbus has put significant effort and resources into distributing facial coverings and increasing the public’s awareness of the importance of wearing them," Ginther added. "But the fact is the number of cases of COVID-19 in our community continues to rise."
