COVID-19 Update: 96,358 Confirmed Cases in Ohio, 3,405 Deaths

August 10, 2020

Today, the Ohio Department of Health (ODH) released the latest statistics tied to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. ODH reported 862 newly confirmed cases and 64 hospitalizations today.

It also reported 96,358 confirmed cases, 3,405 deaths and 11,537 hospitalizations. The department also reported 79,321 presumed recoveries.

ODH also reported 5,373 probable cases and 268 additional deaths under an expanded case definition of COVID-19 from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Additionally, last Friday, Lt. Governor Husted announced that schools can begin applying for the new BroadbandOhio Connectivity Grant on August 10. A total of $50 million will be allocated through the grant program to help provide hotspots and internet-enabled devices to students. Schools can begin applying for this grant opportunity via this link. The public website launched August 10; however, schools were not able to apply until today. The application period will close August 21, 2020.

After hearing feedback from various groups that the matching grant requirement would create a barrier for districts, it has been removed from the program. Many school districts have already begun to make purchases for the upcoming school year, and as a result, purchases made since July 1 of this year are eligible for support from this program.

In the coming days, the Ohio Department of Education (ODE) will begin notifying district superintendents and school leaders around the state to make them aware of this program. To help schools make the best purchasing decisions based on their needs, internet providers have begun to list their equipment and pricing information in one centralized location to the benefit of Ohio schools through a Request for Information.
