Supporting the Nurses Keeping Schools Safe
As schools across the country open their doors, school nurses are being transformed into front-line workers. The Texas Medical Association (TMA) has released a decision tree to help nurses determine which actions to take when a student shows up with COVID-19 symptoms.

“How are we going to do this? Are we going to do it really well? What’s the balance between kids at school and safety of everybody?” Darelle Jordan, a school nurse for Wimberley ISD in Texas, said to KXAN News.

The tool will provide some answers and will support the 75 percent of schools that have a part-time or full-time nurse. Twenty-five percent of schools do not have a nurse, and there has been no coordinated effort to hire more school nurses, even as the National Association of School Nurses (NASN) has called upon lawmakers to fund a safe return to schools.
