White House to Issue Budget Preview Friday

It will outline Biden’s priorities during his first year in office

The White House is expected to release a "preview" of the president's fiscal 2022 budget proposal tomorrow, which will help guide lawmakers in drafting appropriations bills.

The Office of Management and Budget (OMB) is working to release a full budget sometime this spring, but OMB spokesperson Rob Friedlander told Roll Call last week that obstruction from Trump administration officials during the transition period and the lack of a full-time OMB director have set back the timetable for a full budget release. President Joe Biden's first choice to lead OMB, Neera Tanden, withdrew her name after running into bipartisan opposition during the confirmation process.

Friedlander said the budget preview this week will give Congress an outline of Biden's priorities during the first year since 2012 that discretionary spending will not be constrained by statutory spending caps. The budget will show how Biden's "full agenda of investments and tax reforms fits together in a fiscally and economically responsible plan to address the overlapping crises we face," Friedlander said.

The president's budget plan does not bind Congress but will guide appropriators in the months-long process to fund the government for the fiscal year that begins in October.
