COVID-19 Update: 12,864 New Cases Reported Today

Dec. 22, 2021

Today, the Ohio Department of Health (ODH) reported 12,864 new cases of COVID-19 and 492 new hospitalizations. The agency did not any additional deaths.

This marks the second consecutive day health officials have reported the highest number of COVID-19 cases in a "true" 24-hour period since the start of the pandemic. Only days that included backlogged cases or multi-day reporting after holidays have exceeded Wednesday's number. The new high comes as the omicron variant is rapidly spreading across the country.

ODH also reported 1,880,588 confirmed cases, 28,277 deaths and 93,794 hospitalizations. The agency also reported 1,687,189 presumed recoveries and indicated approximately 6,937,844 Ohioans have received at least one dose of the vaccine. This figure represents approximately 59 percent of Ohioans - a very low figure compared to numbers nationwide.
