COVID-19 Update: 19,442 New Cases Reported Today

Jan. 6, 2022

Today, the Ohio Department of Health (ODH) reported 19,442 new cases of COVID-19 and 453 new hospitalizations. The agency did not report any additional deaths.

Last week, Governor Mike DeWine said COVID-19 hospitalizations are at their highest levels of the pandemic. Ohio's health officials expect to see the omicron variant become dominant throughout the state.

ODH also reported 2,132,266 confirmed cases, 29,674 deaths and 98,730 hospitalizations. The agency also reported 1,801,895 presumed recoveries and indicated approximately 7,032,160 Ohioans have received at least one dose of the vaccine. This figure represents 60 percent of Ohioans - a low figure compared to numbers nationwide.

According to a report from WBNS-10TV, Columbus Public Health Commissioner Dr. Mysheika Roberts said omicron appeared to be much contagious than the original variant. Roberts said one person with the delta variant can spread it to as many as seven people. However, someone with omicron can spread it to as many as 10.
