ASAE Starts Free Coalition to Help Pass Workforce Legislation
There is no cost to join the coalition
The American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) has been working hard to build support for the bipartisan, bicameral Freedom to Invest in Tomorrow’s Workforce Act (S. 722 / H.R. 1477), which would expand economic opportunities and increase access to valuable postsecondary credentials. To amplify our industry voice, ASAE and its advocacy partner in workforce development, the Professional Certification Coalition, together established the Tomorrow’s Workforce Coalition.
There is NO COST to join the coalition and member organizations are welcome to participate as much or as little as preferred and practicable. Organizations must join by Friday, July 14 to be listed on ASAE’s press release announcing the coalition. New members are welcome to join after July 14 and indefinitely.
The Freedom to Invest in Tomorrow’s Workforce Act is led by Congressman Rob Wittman (R-Va.) and Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger (D-Va.) in the House and Senators Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) and Mike Braun (R-Ind.) in the Senate.
The legislation would expand qualified expenses under 529 savings plans to include postsecondary training and credentialing programs, such as licenses and nongovernmental certifications. It would also provide valuable tax-advantaged resources for students and workers—with or without a college degree—who pursue career growth, mid-career changes or career pathways that diverge from a typical academic route.
The House bill’s cosponsor list increased more than 600 percent since its introduction in early March. Support is near 50-50 in both the House and Senate, with a bias to each chamber’s majority party – Republicans in the House and Democrats in the Senate.
This coalition’s work will support all professionals, organizations, industries and professions for which credentials, skills training and expertise are essential.
