ACLU, Other Advocates Sue Trump over EO Ending Birthright Citizenship
Birthright citizenship embodies America’s most fundamental promise
The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and other advocates have sued Trump over his executive order (EO) ending automatic citizenship for anyone born in the United States, arguing that he is wrongly denying a right enshrined in the U.S. Constitution.
"Birthright citizenship embodies America’s most fundamental promise: that all children born on our soil begin life as full and equal members of our national community, regardless of their parents’ origins, status, or circumstances," according to the complaint filed in Concord, New Hampshire. “This principle has enabled generations of children to pursue their dreams and build a stronger America."
Trump said in his order that the Constitution’s 14th Amendment "has never been interpreted to extend citizenship universally to everyone born within the United States." It was adopted in 1868 to ensure citizenship for Black people after the Confederacy's loss in the Civil War and the expansion of freedom to all Americans.
