A World Without Bosses

How freelancers are escaping the iron rule of oppressive kingdoms

Dan: So I was working in real jobs like a grownup human being, going to the office and wearing fancy clothes and doing those kinds of things, having bosses and getting paychecks and things like that. And after a certain time, I couldn't stand it anymore.

That's Dan Pink. He used to work in the White House as the chief speech writer to Vice President Al Gore. And although Dan liked his boss, he hated having a boss.

Dan: I like deciding what I'm going to do, not being assigned something. I like determining when I'm going to come into the office, not having someone else say, "We've got a meeting at 8:30, you have to be there." I like saying, "This weekend, I'm not going to work," rather than "This weekend, you have to work."

So he quit. And since then, Dan has been his own boss.
