Taking the stage at former president Donald Trump’s Madison Square Garden rally on Sunday, Elon Musk looked elated as the crowd chanted his name. Pointing to his black “Gothic MAGA” hat, the tech billionaire barreled into a speech about a more prosaic topic: the federal budget.
“We’re going to get the government off your back and out of your pocketbook,” Musk said. “Your money is being wasted, and the department of government efficiency is going to fix that.”
In recent months, Musk has repeatedly floated the idea for a government efficiency commission, abbreviated as DOGE. He’s posted teasing memes on X, formerly known as Twitter, and discussed the concept with allies on the Trump campaign, on a Tesla earnings call and with friends — boasting at Sunday’s rally that DOGE would cut $2 trillion from the federal budget, a sum far larger than the budgets of the Departments of Defense (DOD), Education (DOE) and Homeland Security (DHS) combined.
