The Trump administration is proposing major cuts to federal government spending in its 2026 budget request, which was released Friday by the White House.
The budget proposes to cut what’s known as non-defense discretionary spending by $163 billion — about 23 percent. That category covers programs including education, science, housing assistance and many other items besides the Pentagon and Homeland Security. It also does not include programs such as Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid, which collectively account for the bulk of overall spending.
Certain line items in the budget reflect the White House’s belief that Congress will approve additional funding through reconciliation, a process separate from annual government funding legislation.
