The CEO of Ohio-based manufacturing company Austin Powder issued a statement to residents in Vinton County after some were evacuated last week because of a chemical leak.
The incident happened June 11 at the Austin Powder Red Diamond plant in McArthur. The company, headquartered in Cleveland, produces industrial explosives used for mining and construction purposes.
The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) said nitric acid entered a 5,000-gallon process tank and it had a reaction in the tank. The reaction in the tank created nitrogen oxide gas and vented into the air, creating an orangish-brown gas in the sky.
