New Ag Commodity Tester Certification Requirements Take Effect in 2025

Change to Take Effect on April 9

Starting April 9, 2025, a significant change will take effect for individuals seeking Ag Commodity Tester Certification (Grain Graders) in Ohio. Moving forward, certification will only be granted through attendance at a three-hour training session—testing alone will no longer fulfill the requirement.

Grain Grading Training Opportunities

To assist our members, OABA will host four ODA-approved Grain Grading Schools in 2025:

  • June 5 – McComb High School, 328 Todd St., McComb, OH 45858
  • July 17 – OSU Wooster, Skou Hall 100, 1889 Garrison Circle W, Wooster, OH 44691
  • August 26 – Grace Lutheran Church, 1801 Saint Paris Pike, Springfield, OH 45504
  • September 10 – Ohio Department of Agriculture, 8995 E Main St, Reynoldsburg, OH 43068

This three-hour Grain Grading Course will provide hands-on training in:

  • Grading procedures for corn, soybeans, and wheat
  • Sampling techniques and proper equipment usage

Both new and renewing testers will receive the same training and must sign a verification of attendance form. Instruction is provided by Eurofins Grain Inspection.

State Requirements

Under the Ohio Commodity Handler Law, individuals performing quality tests to apply premiums or discounts must:

  • Be trained and hold a commodity tester number from the State of Ohio
  • Complete continuing education every five years (starting in 2025) to maintain certification

This update ensures that all testers receive consistent, high-quality training to maintain industry standards.
