COVID-19 Update: Residents in 12 Counties Now Required to Wear Masks in Public

July 9, 2020

Ohio has seen a spike in the number of confirmed coronavirus cases across the state over the last few weeks. Twelve counties have now been placed on the state’s COVID-19 risk alert system, up from seven just two days ago.

The Ohio Department of Health (ODH) released the state’s latest coronavirus numbers this afternoon. ODH reported 61,331 total confirmed and probable cases of COVID-19 in Ohio, which is an increase of 1,150 cases, along with a total of 3,006 deaths, up 15 from yesterday. This recent spike in numbers, especially among young people, has prompted the governor to mandate mask-wearing in public in seven counties.

"It’s important to remember that these are lagging indicators," said Governor Mike DeWine. "If the pattern we are seeing in other states continues, we can expect to see hospitalizations, ICU admissions and deaths increase a few weeks after increases in cases."
