Significant Earthquake Rattles NYC and New Jersey Region

Thus far, minimal damage has been reported

A significant earthquake rattled the New York City and North Jersey area just before 10:30 a.m. Friday.

The quake, which initially lasted under a minute, was felt throughout the city, as far north as Boston and as far south as Philadelphia, according to residents. The temblor briefly put the region on pause with a temporary closure of the Holland Tunnel and the grounding of flights at area airports, but so far no significant damage has been reported and scientists say the likelihood of serious aftershocks is slim.

Rutgers geology professor Alexander Gates said it was "probably the biggest instrumental earthquake we've ever had in New Jersey. Or even in the area," during an interview on the "Brian Lehrer Show." "We [have] had big ones that are even estimated to be bigger than this, but the last one we had was in 1884 before we had any seismographs."
