Flood Dangers Grow as Debby Continues Trek Through Southeast U.S.

It could reach into New England and the Mid-Atlantic by this weekend

The potential for dangerous flooding is growing across portions of the Southeast as Tropical Storm Debby continues to slog across the region.

The storm, blamed for at least four deaths in Florida where it struck as a hurricane Monday, could produce over 20 inches of rain in southeast Georgia and eastern South Carolina.

The "potentially historic heavy rainfall" will probably result in areas of "catastrophic flooding," according to the National Hurricane Center. The storm is expected to move back over the Atlantic Ocean late Tuesday and could intensify again before making a second landfall in South Carolina on Thursday, bringing another round of torrential rain, strong winds and coastal flooding. From there, it may bring its heavy rain through the Mid-Atlantic and New England into the weekend.
