Massive 7.0 Earthquake Rattles Northern California

It briefly prompted a tsunami warning

Residents along the Northern California coast were rattled on Thursday by an earthquake centered off the coast south of Eureka. Preliminary estimates showed that the quake had a magnitude of 7.0, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The authorities said they were surveying for signs of damage. The closest city to the epicenter, Ferndale, has a population of about 1,300 people; the quake was also felt more than 200 miles to the south in the San Francisco Bay Area, and in the Sacramento Valley to the east.

The National Weather Service (NWS) briefly issued a tsunami warning in coastal counties in Northern California and Southern Oregon, telling residents to head inland or for high ground, but it canceled the alert about an hour after the quake occurred.
