This Week's Wild Weather to be Driven by East Coast’s First Seasonal Atmospheric River

A roller coaster of weather is headed to the central and eastern United States. An atmospheric river will hit the region Wednesday, bringing the potential for flooding rains, powerful winds and dangerous travel conditions that will accompany a dramatic change in temperatures along the Eastern seaboard — temperatures in the 50s, 60s and 70s will drop to the 20s, 30s and 40s.

Rain, wind and high elevation snow will span the East Coast on Wednesday. It’s typical for storms to follow big temperature swings, as the disturbances are Mother Nature’s way of trying to smooth out the differences. And although the storm will bring concerning conditions, it will also be a welcome change for reservoirs from Wilmington, North Carolina, to Worcester, Massachusetts, in a region that has been plagued by unusual levels of drought.

Of particular concern is the potential for wind gusts in excess of 60 mph from Long Island to Maine late Wednesday as a squall line moves through the region. This narrow but feisty feature could cause tropical-storm-force winds, downing trees and power lines across parts of six states: New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Maine.
