For most U.S. residents, the sun went down earlier on one of the past few days than at any other time of the year.

Jarringly early December sunsets are the result of the annual “fall back” from daylight saving time (DST) to standard time. But what if we had never sprung forward in the first place?

Incoming Trump administration “government efficiency” advisers Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy posted recently in favor of dumping DST for good. On the flip side, in 2022, the U.S. Senate advanced a plan to make daylight saving time permanent.
