Johnson’s Speakership in Doubt as Trump, Musk Scrap Spending Plan

Meanwhile, Democrats won't come to his rescue

The ability of House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) to hang on to his position when Congress reconvenes next month has been thrown into doubt after Republicans, egged on by President-elect Donald Trump and Elon Musk, rejected a three-month stopgap funding extension. The government will shut down this weekend if a bill is not passed.

Democrats won't come to the rescue if House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) is short of votes to be reelected to his position on Jan. 3, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) said Thursday.

Asked if Democrats would help, Jeffries offered a one-word answer: "No."
